Finding Our Voices

When I first started writing Resilient Wednesday, a colleague sent me a note about nine months into the series, congratulating me on “finding my voice.” She said the writing finally sounded like how I speak, creating an authenticity that deeply resonated with her.

Her words meant more than I could express. Finding your voice—whether in writing, work, or life—takes time and a willingness to grow into it.

As I embark on this new journey with What’s Next, I’m still in the process of finding my voice, and I’ve realized that’s okay. Transitions, whether creative, personal, or professional, require patience and exploration.

Recently, I met with a potential client who embodies the kind of person I’m excited to work with. He’s 51 and has spent 25 years at his company. While he’s had a successful career, he feels like he’s hit a ceiling. The work no longer excites him, and he’s grappling with the uncertainty of a potential cost-cutting initiative that might jeopardize his role.

What started as a quick 30-minute call turned into a 90-minute deep dive. We talked through his concerns and all the scenarios swirling in his mind. As he shared, I helped him organize his thoughts into actionable steps, transforming the conversation into a plan for creating career options that put him back in control.

Beyond crafting a plan, we also focused on how to approach the journey:

Embracing the Process

If you’re asking yourself “what’s next,” here are three practical ways to start moving forward:

  1. Start Before You’re Ready
You don’t need all the answers to take the first step. Perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. I’m the perfect example of this. I’m redoing my blog and exploring possibilities.
  2. Be Open to Feedback
Like my colleague’s note, honest feedback helps refine your direction and reminds you that others see your potential, even when you don’t.
  3. Give Yourself Grace
Transitions are rarely linear. Progress comes in fits and starts, so celebrate your small wins and trust the process.

Finding your voice—or figuring out your next step—is rarely a straight path. It’s more about being present, experimenting, and staying open to what unfolds.

What’s been on your mind lately? Are you facing your own “what’s next” moment? I’d love to hear where you are in your journey and what possibilities you’re exploring.
