Holiday Wisdom: What I Learned from a Vacation

Vacations are more than just a break from routine—they offer fresh perspectives, new experiences, and sometimes unexpected insights. Sheila and I recently spent time in St. Martin, our first trip down there. We swam in the warm Caribbean waters, hiked across ancient landscapes, and indulged in incredible French and Dutch cuisine. When I took time to quiet myself, I recognized the holiday helped me see beyond the sand and waves to the horizon. Here are some of my takeaways

1. The Power of Perspective

Standing atop an old Dutch fort overlooking the vast ocean, I thought about the history beneath my feet. What was once a site of conflict is now a peaceful, scenic overlook. It made me wonder: How often do I get stuck in my battles without realizing that, given time, they, too, will pass?

Shifting my perspective, whether on vacation or in life, opened me up to new possibilities. What if your challenge is part of a longer journey that will look utterly different in hindsight?

2. The Art of True Relaxation

We live in a world where productivity is king. But as I floated in the seaside pool, I realized how much I underestimated the power of doing absolutely nothing.

Relaxing is very difficult. Relaxation isn’t just about stepping away from work—it’s about giving space to reset and quieting the distractions from taking over our mind and body. Rest is part of the journey. When did you get your last one

3. Finding Happiness in Simple Things

Sitting at the front of a sailing catamaran, watching the sunset, I felt deep gratitude—pure joy and delight in the moment. I found happiness not in the trip’s fun but in the small, everyday wonders like the teens sitting on the catamaran’s netting and talking to each other rather than checking their phones, watching people dance to the sounds of Bob Marley (I had to join in) and taking in the beauty of the sunset.

Happiness doesn’t require a Caribbean getaway. It’s about noticing what’s already around us—the beauty of a winter tree, the warmth of a friend calling to say hello or enjoying a hot bowl of chili. Where in your life can you invite more joy by simply paying attention?

4. Strength and Resilience in Nature and Ourselves

Hiking across ancient volcanic terrain, I was struck by how nature endures. These landscapes have withstood hurricanes, heat, and centuries of change, yet they remain. Resilience isn’t about avoiding the storm but learning how to endure it.

The same is true for all of us. We carry our past experiences, struggles, and triumphs, yet we keep going. Think about your journey—where have you proven your resilience, even when you didn’t realize it at the time?

What’s Next?

This trip reminded me that the lessons I seek aren’t always found where I expect them. Perspective, relaxation, joy, and resilience aren’t just vacation takeaways; they’re mindsets I can cultivate daily.
